Problem with pan and zoom

My software is:
Version 0.7.7.1
Pan and zoom doesn't work..
I tried many things but it just doesn't work !!!
Am I missing something?

Version 0.7.7.1? That's before summer 2009 and no longer supported. It might contain many bugs which are already solved for quite some time. Please update first to a newer version. Most distributions have 0.8.2.x but even that one is now outdated. Please try to get the latest 0.9.2.
