Rendering crashes at the end ubuntu 12.04 X64 kdenlive 0.9

First post :) and i should mention i am new to linux so i am not really good at it :( and English is not my first language :( sorry
So i am having problem with rendering files on kdenlive 0.9 when it reaches 100% suddenly rendering crashes

Kdenlive 0.8.2.1/ Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits
Unable to render anything. Kdenlive crashed
What I did:
Tried to purge, update, reinstall without improvement.
Removed the file home/user/.kde/share/config/kdenliverc
Then started kdenlive from console with: padsp kdenlive
I can render perfectly now
Hope it will solve some issues

It seems versions of Kdenlive in official repositories are deprecated. I found it is strongly recommended to install Kdenlive 0.9 packages using Sunab's alternative repository.
Try sudo apt-get remove kdenlive melt
Then reinstall using the command line in terminal (just copy and paste):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kdenlive

then launch using command line
padsp kdenlive

I have also tried the procedure but no succes.

However, it may be interesting to notify that I have two new installs of Ubuntu 12.04 not working while on a third PC, I did an upgrade to 12.04 instead of clean install
and no problem on that system.

The main difference I can see between (not working) new installs and (working) upgrade is:
- the version of MLT 0.7.7 instead of LT 0.7.8 on new installs.
- kdenlive v 0.8.2.1 (kde development platform 4.8.2) instead of v 0.9 (kde development platform 4.8.2)

Really buggy app but thing is when it finishes rendering(and crashes) i get rendered file in output directory that plays with no problem but i do not know if file is lacking something or not

Even I faced this issue with KDENLIVE 0.9 and Linux Mint Maya 64 bit Cinnamon edition. However the video was proper. Not sure why did rendering crashed.

Same problem for me, except since I upgrade to 0.9 the quality of rendering has dropped alot. Soo many bigs in this version. I'm probably going to have to ditch Kdenlive. The really need to release a stable version of this software.

The output seems to be good, no lack of quality. (H.264 12k, 384kbps audio).

One more thing, this happened to me only once. I rendered two more videos after the crash. It went on fine.

I'm also getting crashes at the end of the rendering process each time I try. But the video is displayed fine by my movie player. Is it really crashing?

Me Too.

Upraded to 12.04 recently. After this upgrade I was left with Kdenlive 0.8.2.1 using KDE development platform 4.8.2 and MLT ver 0.7.7. With this setup I could not render Mpeg-4, Xvid4 , H.264 or flash as they reported unsupported video codec.

I fixed this by
sudo apt-get install libavcodec-extra-53
but then I noted unsupported audio codec: pcm_s16le
But also noted that the Kdenlive web site was recomending Kdenlive 0.9 and MLT 0.7.8 from sunab repository

Which I have now installed. And that brings me to where I am now where I am having exactly the same issues as hamoid and Levan7 [I think Sylvere's issue was a different one].

My videos also appear to be fine too. I also wonder if the MLT is reporting a false abort and error.

So based on inspiration from another thread I tried to run the melt call from the above post in the terminal.

And it renders the video and eventually returns

Further on this - when I run the following

you get various warning messages like ...

And then melt goes ahead and starts the processing. Then some time later you get

So because the "VBV buffer size not set" warning appears well ahead of the actual crash I suspect it may have nothing to do with this issue.

I was able to extract the following (useless to me) info from the core dump

gdb -c core

Core was generated by `/usr/bin/melt /home/ttguy/Videos/scripts/test_mpg_render.sh.mlt -profile dv_pal'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.

In my opinion the problem is with ffmpeg. On the 22nd of February I wrote about the same problem (rendering crashed at the end but video looks fine):

On the 22nd of February 2012 the problem was only with H.264 profile, and then (in my case) the solution was to downgrade ffmpeg from 0.10 to 0.7.8
From that time there wasn't any signs of fixing the problem (3 months now).

Now ffmpeg 0.7.8 is NOT available in my distribution so I have to use only 0.10.3 (I use Kdenlive 0.9.2, ffmpeg 0.10.3, mlt 0.7.8)
and the error is for the ALL profiles now - see bellow, so apart video crashes at the end of rendering it is IMPOSSIBLE to render any 2pass video now.

HDV

MPEG-2

Hopefully there is a new mlt (0.9) and new ffmpeg (0.11) both published few days ago - if those 2 won't solve the problems - we have to ask programers for a fundraising campaign - so finally someone form ffmpeg and mlt team will have some more time to solve those BAD bugs.

Maybe it is A GOOD idea to have in kdenlive error messages with such information, what went wrong in which module, so we will have information where the problem exactly is - in ffmpeg or mlt or kdnlive - so eg. we wont waste the time of kdenlive team if the problem is from melt or ffmpeg...

Please test new packages for Ubuntu Precise with latest mlt update at ppa:sunab/sunab2, the bug seem to be gone ...

If it's all good for everyone I will copy to kdenlive-release ppa.

dist-upgrade is necessary (or partial upgrade in update-manager bad terminology)

Slightly Off Topic but why does my ffmpeg report
"This program is not developed anymore and is only provided for compatibility. Use avconv instead (see Changelog for the list of incompatible changes)." but vyalern reports that ffmpeg keeps getting new version numbers.

I was pointing a secondary ppa I use as a sandbox to prepare packages. "ppa:sunab/sunab2" is the "address" of the ppa you can feed in Ubuntu sources manager. If you insist for a command line procedure :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/sunab2
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

@all users the "sunab2" ppa is a sandbox. You are encouraged to DISABLE this ppa immediately. In other occasions packages found here may hurt your system.
If other users confirm success I will push these packages to the stable one (ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release)

at this moment I have both update sources for kdenlive disabled, not to get in troubles with updates.
would you please inform when it is safe to activate sunab kdenlive-release again

And my test project now renders to completion.

And the command line option reports zero errors:

Thanks everyone for your feedback. All glory for this update goes to the mlt developper Dan Dennedy. The release of MLT 0.8.0 adresses a large part of our problem. So it it now pushed to the kdenlive-release ppa.

Now every single pass render works without complaints : tested with Raw DV, Xvid4, Mpeg4, h.264 and webm profiles.
I can confirm the last problem spotted by ttguy : Xvid4 profile with two pass rendering complains... I will investigate more.

This is an occasion for me to remind everyone about mixing as few ppas as possible. Some users asked me so here is the public remimder :

- my packages are built with regular ffmpeg and KDE versions from the original Ubuntu repositories. Don't use backported versions.

- ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release dedicated to the latest kdenlive+mlt stable releases.
- ppa sunab/kdenlive-svn dedicated to the latest development snapshots from kdenlive+mlt : use at your own risks, I've setup this for bug reporting only.

These are my two only ppas dedicated to kdenlive : and most important : NEVER mix them, in a regular basis they become incompatible (different version of libmlt).

Currently using the build script to test too. Even that failed with a ffmpeg compile faliure.

Finally the ffmpeg errors have been fixed in git so build script now works again, unfortuneatly rendering still crashes same error with MLT's melt. :-(

hi sunab, any of them from Raw DV to h264.

The project I was working on was 10bit 4:2:2 source but assume this is just dithered down by ffmpeg on import, it's certainly picked up as 10bit, plays on the timeline etc.

But even a simple one clip 1080p h264 MOV file crashes rendering trying to encode to h264, xvid, mpeg4, WebM , all exact same error message, so it's not related to 10bit.

Ubuntu x64 12.04

Can also confirm exact same error on another machine x64 Ubuntu 12.04 latest sunab svn build from today. Two more machines to go. 32bit OS on them though.

32bit 12.04 Ubuntu + sunab kdenlive- svn renders to certin formats like mpeg2 but complains x264 and dv are missing.:-( No crashing though. :-) haven't used the build script on 32bit.

Updated again today, melt wouldn't update though, listed in the Update Manager but unticked and uninstallable because it clashed with kdenlive data, so uninstalled kdenlive, MLT etc everything related and tried reinstalling now kdenlive-svn won't install at all due to dependancy problems:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
kdenlive : Depends: kdenlive-data (= 0.9.2+git20120605.7faa38b6-0ubuntu0~sunab~precise1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: melt but it is not going to be installed

So built from the build script and rendering still crashes even after further updates relating to ffmpeg git and kdenlive git. Same melt error.

Another freaking mess relating to rendering, reminisent of last months or two's troubles. x64 related though I think as 32bit renders except only certain codecs, x264 not being one of them.

The problem with the ppa is very common, at the moment you updated your package list the mlt/kdenlive packages were "half built". Tipically, the *-data packages are arch idenpendant but built in a i386 virual machine. These days Soyuz (the ppa build system) is very busy, as a result packages for i386 and amd64 are built with hours of delay, in the mean time all people updating packages from the ppa face dependencies errors. If you wan't to avoid this, check first on the lanchpad page if all packages are built.

Now for the rendering problem :

you said :"any of them from Raw DV to h264". I've experienced the same behaviour with Kdenlive 0.9 + MLT 0.7.8 (in the kdenlive-release ppa). Now I've pushed to this ppa MLT 0.8.0 and rebuilt kdenlive 0.9.2 and now the this problem is gone.(execpt with xvid4 profile with two pass rendering)

Note : the kdenlive-svn ppa wasn't up to date this past week. Yesterday I pushed new packages so you can expect crash free rendering for most profiles too.

By the way, I hope you don't use a backported ffmpeg version.

This is most strange. I'm using x64 ubuntu and all rendering is fine except xvid which is 1 pass only.

I'm using:-

Kdenlive 0.9+git20120529....
Mlt 0.8+git20120604....

ffmpeg compiled from git about 10 days ago (the latest update.)

Haven't updated Kdenlive etc today. Too scared.

I am unable to reproduce the yellow's last problem.

All is ok for me too except xvid 2 pass rendering like you.

Don't be scared ;)

I carefully remind everyone here that my packages are built against regular ubuntu ffmeg/libav packages. Using my packages with manually built ffmpeg/libav will work until a git change break binary compatibility. So it's risky...

Hi, I just built from source using the build script. To my knowledge this is completely self contained and that everything kdenlive needs to use and successfully render is contained within the dated folder. No access to system wide libav or whatever else. if this is incorrect then maybe that's the problem, but it's a problem I have on more than one PC.

This is the latest failed render error, any codec, x264, mpeg2, libxvid shows as unsupported as sunab mentions.

ERROR: ld.so: object '/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
*** glibc detected *** /home/yellow/kdenlive/20120606/bin/melt: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00007ffff7987f08 ***

The libpthread is a new addition to the error message which previously was just the melt error free(): invalid pointer.....

With regard to PPA builds and system ffmpeg/libav, all these libraries are Ubuntu distro's own 4:0.8.1ubuntu1

I just updated and rendered out a small selected zone with Mpeg4 and H.264 both 2 pass and all works fine here.

Funny I just tried rendering just a selection following your comment and kdenlive from PPA just crashes outright with a segfault. :-( where as whole project just gives render error.

Rendering a selection on the build script version doesn't segfault, just crashes rendering.

This is very wierd, something is messed up on your system(s).

The lastest git with build script and with my packages should be working. They are working here and for other users. I've just tested both methods in fresh installed virtual machines, and I'am unable to reproduce the crash.

With the build script the produced binaries are self contained in a forlder but all these binaries may be affected by various system wide dependencies, as the build script doesn't provide latest git for all dependencies.

edit : could you upload a render script of your project to be able to check the render settings ?

Just a simple 1 clip file crashes even.

I'd add that with regards to messed up system(s), I've been happily rendering projects on all machines right up until upgrading to 12.04 from 11.10 and recent kdenlive / MLT development.

I've also just wiped all traces of libav libraries, kdenlive and MLT and reinstalled them all again, still no good. :-(

When you say "upgrading to 12.04" was that really an upgrade or a fresh install?

I've had so much trouble with upgrades in the past (well... twice actually) that I now do a fresh install every time.
