 Which MLT version do you have? Can you make sure that your MLT is built with the "kdenlivetitle" producer:

in a terminal, type:
melt -query producers

and paste the result here...

http://ppa.launchpad.net/sunab/ppa/ubuntu [^] karmic main

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with the sunab repository above and Synaptic picked up melt 0.5.0 from the sunab repository, so I would give that a try.

 I've added the repository, updated and reinstalled but still no melt with the "kdenlivetitle" producer. What do I need to do?

 I could have something to do with this comflict, but melt is in the repo new section

 In the terminal can you do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

And then see if melt is updated to 5.0.

 If I open synaptic, it says 0.5-0ubuntu0~karmic1 is installed. But if I do
Melt -version it says 0.4.5 is installed. I don't get it.

 melt 0.4.5 is a development version that was never released as an official package. you probably installed a development version once and now have several copies of melt. I recommend that you remove all mlt/kdenlive packages. Then,make sure there is no copy of melt lying around:

also check in /usr/lib and /usr/local/lib and in /opt/lib if you have any libmlt* files or an "mlt" folder. remove all this mlt stuff, then reinstall the sunab packages

 Removed everything mlt and reinstalled. Now problem with dependencies:

melt -version
melt: error while loading shared libraries: libmlt.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

 Try:

sudo ldconfig

If it doesn't solve, in a terminal:

which melt

That will tell you where melt is installed, should be /usr/bin/melt
Then, check that you have a file /usr/lib/libmlt.so.2

If not, there is something wrong with the MLT package...

 Thanks, followed the above, but there's a problem with the package which is missing libmlt.so.2.

I'll try reinstalling again but looks like its a dependency problem in the packaging, probably just a script which assumes libmlt library already installed ...
