Summary0002153: playback of large projects produces choppy audio, video, and transitions
DescriptionFollowing a lack of response/suggestions to http://www.kdenlive.org/forum/version-081-rev5589-choppy-audio, [^] I did some additional testing. I am able to play sounds and videos smoothly using other apps like aplay, mplayer, melt, Rhythmbox, Banshee, and VLC.

If I have a large Kdenlive project with 667 JPEG's, and an MP3, playback is really choppy. The choppiness of sound, video, and transitions make it impossible to use.
Steps To ReproduceCreate a project with 600+ JPEG files
Put them onto Video2 & Video3 tracks
Add a title clip to Video1
Add an MP3 to Audio1
Play
Additional InformationI did a Save As and cut the files down to 555 and things improved. I followed that with another Save As and cut the files down to 444. Each time, the playback became smoother.

I can archive the project and land it somewhere if you want me to along with the 2 additional project files with fewer clips on the tracks.

WHat happens if you try to play the project file with MLT's command line player?

From a terminal, type:

melt myproject.kdenlive

It should play the file, is it better than in Kdenlive?

I played the Kdenlive project with melt and it went flawlessly. Audio and Video are both quite smooth.

FYI, the archive file of the project is ~351M

Maybe that's a memory issue, because Kdenlive stores thumnails for your images... Can you check the memory usage on your system to see if when you open the project in Kdenlive it takes all your memory?

Maybe you could also try to disable audio and video thumbs in the timeline and see if it improves playback...

With minimal stuff running, top shows 3.0G of memory with ~800M free when I have the project open. I turned off audio & video thumbs, restarted Kdenlive (even though it turned them off immediately), and reopened the project. No difference in playback performance. I re-ran melt with the project and it played nicely.

And what is the memory usage when playing the file with melt?

With minimum stuff running, including Kdenlive *not*, top showed 2.1G free before running melt.

Running melt with the project, free memory got down to 1.40G when first played and then down to 1.25G where it stayed for awhile. After that, it proceeded to fluctuate a bit and then slowly decreased to just under 1.0G and then started a gradual increase until the video completed.
