Need to correct slightly what was said earlier:
"(need to reboot to get audio back)"
I had earlier shut down Iceweasel & tried again; still no audio in Kdenlive. After making above report I began shutting down ready to reboot, but had one more attempt at playing, and this time got audio. Very frustrating.
Rendering that (very short) snippet gave a `Crashed' message. The .avi played fine in another player.
Recent projects have all rendered fine, and also recently without the `Rendering has crashed' message. I believe there to likely be a connection between the two (no audio after youTube play + crash after render).
