I found this via google. Before I wondered how the heck I could change the volume with this effect when there are no settings displayed.

Wouldn't there be enough room in the Effect Magazine widget to display a brief help? Doesn't have to be much more than «double-click on your clip to add a new volume keyframe» or whatever.
