projects not playing on Windows

I apologize if I missed the answer to this in the forums. But, I've been having trouble producing a file format that can be read by Windows. (The rendered projects work fine on Linux).

My first attempt was an mp4 file. This produced: "error -2041: an invalid sample description was found in the movie" on RealPlayer. I found a lot of references to this error on the internet but few solutions (none of which worked).

I also tried mpg, which produced a video image with a patchwork of coloured squares superimposed.

Lastly, I've just tried an .rm format (200k) NTSC. But, RealPlayer reports "a General Error" (not a very helpful error message...)

I'm using kdenlive 0.7.8 and melt 0.5.10

I must admit that video file formats are a mystery to me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Forums:

Use a better media player, like VLC, or in the Kdenlive Render dialog, choose Destination: Media Players.

Here's another recommendation for VLC. http://www.videolan.org/
It works great on linux, mac and windows and can handle about any file format.

Gosh! I feel embarrassed that I didn't see the Destinations: Media Players option. That did the trick. :D

Oh, you don't have to try very hard to convince me that MS products are garbage. Unfortunately, all the relatives whom I'm sharing my simple home movies with use Windows and installing new software is beyond most of their skills.

Thanks so much for your help. Kdenlive is a great project, I love using it!
