Introducing Color Scopes: The Vectorscope

The last scope (after the Histogram and the Waveform and RGB Parade) that is new to kdenlive 0.7.8 is the Vectorscope. This is actually the most interesting scope because it is quite different from the other ones and, secondly, is really useful for Color Grading.

Coming soon to your Desktop...

Just wanted to post a screenshot of Kdenlive's current development version that includes a great new feature: a Stop motion utility.
The only drawback is that this feature currently depends on a specific hardware to capture from HDMI. So how does it work?

It's very easy: just plug your camcorder or digital camera into the HDMI port of a Linux compatible capture card, and you get a live preview of the camcorder.
Click on the capture button to grab an image, you can also transparently overlay the last captured frame on the monitor to easily see the difference with current live feed.

So capture your frames, preview them with the built in preview feature and then click on the "Add sequence" button to add your animated stopmotion sequence to your project.

Kdenlive 0.7.8 released

We are proud to announce the release of Kdenlive 0.7.8. This new version brings many new features, including improved tools for color correction, improved UI for effects (you can now adjust some transitions and effects directly on the monitor), track effects, improved slideshows and a lot more.

The development team is also slowly growing, and Kdenlive benefits from the recent improvements in the MLT framework(version 0.5.10 is required) and Frei0r effects(version 1.2.0 is recommended) projects.

You can find a detailed list of changes on the Kdenlive 0.7.8 information page.

Source code can be downloaded from our sourceforge page, and packages will be announced on our download page when available.

Support can be found in our forums and issues reported on our bugtracker.

We hope you will enjoy this release!

Introducing Color Scopes: The Waveform and The RGB Parade

In my previous post I’ve introduced the Histogram that will be available in kdenlive 0.7.8.

Next in the list of the Color Scopes I added are two closely related scopes: Waveform and RGB Parade. Both of them do the same, Waveform for Luma, RGB Parade for the RGB components. Therefore I will not always explicitly point out that properties hold for both scopes and speak of Waveform only.

Kdenlive 0.7.8: "On-Monitor" Effects

In previous versions of Kdenlive in some effects like pan & zoom and in the transitions Affine and Composite you had this little red rectangle to modify size and position.
For 0.7.8 I tried to make editing this type of parameter more convenient and efficient:
All the options previously available but hidden do now take most space in the effect stack.
The red rectangle disappeared therefore you can now drag and resize your item directly on the monitor.

Track effects in Kdenlive 0.7.8

A new feature introduced in Kdenlive is track effects. There are several situations where this can be useful, for example:

  • You want to make a black and white movie
  • You need to correct the audio balance of all your clips

So now, with Kdenlive 0.7.8, instead of applying the effect to all clips in timeline, you can simply add the effect to the track, and all clips in that track will have the effect applied.

To apply an effect on a track, just drag & drop an effect from the Effect list widget to your track header (see screenshot on the left). You can then adjust your effect settings just like usual (but note that because we had not enough time, keyframes are not yet supported on track effects).

Audio effects improvements in version 0.7.8

We added some basic audio channel manipulations. We have had a Mono to stereo, which basically copied the left channel to the right. This was expanded to allow copying right-to-left. In addition, now you can swap the left and right channels to correct stereo inversion using Swap channels.

Slideshow improvements coming in version 0.7.8

In addition to my work on MLT, I helped to add some things to Kdenlive. One of them is improvements in the Slideshow Clip. A lot of work to make this possible within MLT happened over the course of the year. The two main additions are: Center crop and Animation.

Introducing Color Scopes: The Histogram

Russian translation online!
Translation by Александр Прокудин (Alexandre Prokoudine)

With kdenlive 0.7.8 I added some color scopes, used for displaying color information. In this section I will give a brief overviews over scopes in general and explain the most basic scope, the histogram, in detail.

Color correction. This is a really important topic in video editing. It starts with simple stretching of the tonal range if the brightness is not ideal, goes on with white balance to ensure that white remains white and not blue, and finally ends with creating looks which make your video look unique. (Remember the blueish Minority Report? The contrasty The Departed?)

For color correction we basically need two things, Effects for changing the colors and Scopes for monitoring the changes. The first scope I'm showing now is, as already mentioned, the histogram:
