Playback struggles to keep up on my Phenom 9550 Quad-Core. Image also gets garbled every now and again indicating possible seek issues.

Thank you very much for your report. FFmpeg has timestamp AVCHD decoding issues. This is a know issue. As for speed, Nvidia submitted a patch to implement hardware decoding in FFmpeg. If it gest implemented, a lot of people will be interested to have it in Nvidia. Otherwize, we will try to drop B-Frames. Read: http://www.kdenlive.org/forum/know-issues-about-kdenlive-071
Also thank you VERY MUCH for the footage. This is what helps us work on bugs and reproduce them.
If you don't mind, I will upload your footage to our website for speed and to be sure it is safe.

Feel free to grab the footage from my server, I shot it this afternoon and kept it brief for testing purposes. Let me know if you would like any additional clips at other camera supported resolutions and bitrates.

I switched to unsupported as the AVCHD format probably does not allow to create large projects because of seeking and speed issues. This will allow to fix things more quickly I hope.

is there something new about support this camera since 2008? I am still doing workaround by converting AVCHD to MPEG before editing (I thought it was because my old hardware). Now I'm planning to buy new PC and found this page little bit surprised that camera is not supported at all.
