Kdenlive 16.08.0 marks a milestone in the project’s history bringing it a step closer to becoming a full-fledged professional tool. The highlights of this release are:
3 Point Editing
- Insert or overwrite a timeline region with a clip region.
- Delete or lift timeline regions.
- Also, the long-missing insert mode is now enabled and fully functional: simply drop clips onto the timeline and existing clips will move accordingly to make room.
Timeline effect rendering
Sometimes, you just have too much effects or transitions in your timeline to be able to play it in realtime (you can see on the video, it can only play 13 frames per seconds). This is where this new feature helps you: it pre-renders parts of the timeline so that they can be played in realtime. And you can continue working on other parts of the timeline while Kdenlive is working in the background for you.

For a full list of changes please visit the full log page.
Library Widget
The new Library Widget allows to copy and paste sequences between different projects.
Track header visual optimization
Ability to control the width of the track header by dragging its right border left or right.
Track compositing preview
Individual track control has been replaced by a global option in timeline toolbar to switch compositing modes between: High Quality, Preview and None.
Start-up wizard removal
Kdenlive’s start-up wizard is now removed and will appear only if a configuration problem is detected. Kdenlive now starts up picking the best default options (including NTSC/PAL framerate depending on your region).
Cached Data Manager
Kdenlive as a video editor can produce large amounts of temporary data. Until now, all these temporary files were saved in $HOME/kdenlive. We are now switching to an XDG compliant scheme, and try to give users more infos about how much data is stored, and allow for easy mangement.
Krita support
Native support for Krita images was added.
New Logo and Website
A new modern logo and website reflecting the new phase of the project.
We also celebrate this development cycle with an increased amount of community participation.
In other news more work has been done porting Kdenlive to Windows as part of a GSOC project. Also work has started by the Macports team to bring it to OSX.
Stay tuned for more information on what the future holds.
Thanks for all the amazing work! Would love to see a snap package for this
Keep up the amazing work!
The team is working on providing an AppImage version of Kdenlive. If anybody is interested in working in a Snap version please contact us via the mailing list.
When can we expect to see the Appimage version?
We can’t define an exact date at the moment, but soon hopefully.
That’s great news! I’ve been using kdenlive 0.9.x for years, and I am eager to try the new version – but no way for me to change to some KDE5-including distribution.
I’ll try the AppImage version as soon as it’s published.
Awesome! I edit all of my YouTube videos using kdenlive and look forward to working with the new release.
Please do and let us know about what you’ve liked or new features you’d like to see. Cheers
I have used the older versions and loved it but the new 16 just wont output a clean render no matter what I do. Can someone please help?
Please post this in the forums where you’ll get qualified help.
Same problem…..
Great work, but the slideshow on the homepage is broken
Will look into that, thanks!
Lovely to see the new site and a great new update, awesome work folks! I also agree about the snap comment too.
Son unos grosos, yo aprendí a editar videos gracias a ustedes!!! 😀
Mil gracias por sus aportes, abrazo desde Argentina :3
Gracias 🙂
Mil gracias por este editor de Video <3 Kdenlive, saludos de Ecuador.
More love from a dedicated Kdenlive user. I use Kdenlive for all my video compositing. I still have lots to learn but love that my own skills are always the limitation. Thank you so much for this great tool!
Nice job, this pre-render feature is reeeaaaally convenient.
If you want my opinion I would say that kdenlive still miss to be really professional:
– being able to use opencolorio for better integration with blender and natron. And 32bit linear floating point precision edition.
What would be nice but is not really needed:
– filter track. I tried to create a white track and merge it with a multiply transition with the tracks below, then apply filters on this track. The problem is that filters were applied first then the transition. A simple switcher to say some filters need to be applied after transitions are computed would be sufficient.
– Better exr reading (for example multilayer exr).
– A max of thing keyframable, with a dope sheet and a curve editor.
– scripting
Ho, and I think the new site miss a “get involved” page, I would be happy to give a little help.
At the footer of the site there is a menu on how to get involved. Is it useful? Please join the mailing list or forum to give us more input on how you pretend to help.
Scripting is something I would also like to see. Qt supports JavaScript, but we need to design a useful object model for the user scripts to work with. I don’t think that the internal object model of Kdenlive is suitable for exposure. We are looking for developers who can help with such things!
Beerk, not javascript. The best would be to use Python like Krita, Natron and QGis do (and also Blender, but blender is not Qt-based).
Python is supported in c++/Qt via PythonQt: http://pythonqt.sourceforge.net/
Scripting is an ambitious project, but I think I can help with it. I start a thread on phabricator (+on the forum).
Well definitely vote for more than 8-bit editing. Iwould also love if there was a possibility to “render” color effects to one simple color translation table (maybe LUT-like) which would probably work much faster than many stacked effects… That would be so great..
Would it be possible to integrate g’mic and natron into the program to leverage their image processing and composting capabilities, like flowblade is doing?
We are working on other features at the moment for the short term and since the team is limited in man power this might take some time to happen. G’MIC is in the roadmap as for Natron integration we are probably going to choose an EDL export solution. Join the mailing list if interested in contributing input.
Thank you for this videoeditor , you are amazing
Thank you for this videoeditor , you are amazing !!!
Thanks for the best video editor on Linux!
– From Russia with Love. 😀
a great tool, and a great work done by community!!
Thanks a lot!!
OMG!!! thanks for the best software guys!!!
Thank you because you have done a great job, now Kdenlive is stable enough and can be used to work.
No, I did not, I got caught by the enthusiasm. Simply uploading video clips a little bigger and manipulating the time line kdenlive stops. The videos in question are those of the Blender Foundation. I tried it on S.O. ubuntu 16.04.
I would love to be able to start using Kdenlive for some work, but there are still too many problems. I follow Kdenlive for some time and fell in love with the latent potential of the program, but we are still far from any usability.
If I can afford a tip, …, I think for the future it is better to focus on solving problems that the inclusion of new features.
Thank you all of you for the work you are doing, greetings.
I cannot reproduce your problems… let’s see if we can fix it here (if not head over to the forum).
First, how did you install it? From where? Which version of Kdenlive and MLT are you using?
Also try resetting everything by removing:
$HOME/.local/share/kxmlgui5/kdenlive/kdenliveui.rc
and
.config/kdenliverc
If that doesn’t solve it please report a bug following these instructions:
https://kdenlive.org/bug-reports/ or head over to the forums for more help.
Cheers!
I’m excited to start playing with this version and all the new goodies. I’ve been using Kdenlive for a while but once I started doing YouTube videos my usage skyrocketed into reliance. 🙂
I love Kdenlive and I’m glad to see this new phase of development. Good job on the website update as well.
I agree with above, amazing job! Though need to focus on what it’s good at and facilitate the work flow towards others that are excellent at other aspects like compositing etc, ie integration (or otherwise) with natron (and blender). I dint think it should try and do everything and be a one stop shop. It’s all about the work flow and working together. If I had any experience I would help but unfortunately I know nothing about code….
Great improvement! I’ve been waiting for this. Because Kdenlive taught me the basics of Video editing. And now, even though I use bigger paid softwares, I still want that Kdenlive back. Because its greater than any other. And thanks for improving it in such a great manner. Its one of the greatest improvements I’ve ever seen on the open source software field.
Thank you for release this great software. However I would have thought that when you put out a release announcement, you would link to videos demonstrating the new features as this is after all are a video editing software.
Thanks again
Thanks Matt for your suggestion that would be awesome indeed but our team is currently very small with limited manpower. If you’d like to give us a hand for the next release we would appreciate it. 🙂
Thanks for the new version.
However I am still missing Firewire support…. Will there be an update to get it back?
System Kubuntu 16.04.
DVgrab works fine with firewire.
See there is already reported a Bug, so I will not report another.. or ?
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361597
No help in forum, but others have the same issue:
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=269&t=135282&sid=e10fc4bb0b92346d2679991b797a01e6
Thanks 🙂
Awesome job, guys. I’ve been using Kdenlive for a few years now and I love it. Pre-rendering brings it really to an awesome point for working with full HD and 4k video so that things don’t get too sluggish. ALSO, I have a lot of assets that I share across projects, so I’m excited about that feature.
New feature (or maybe they’re there and I don’t know)
-being able to use timestamps like some of the other pro software
I second the previous suggestion that a video (made with OBS or something) that demonstrates the features would be great. Some of these I’m not sure how to use and others I’m not 100% sure what they mean. So a video demonstration would be AWESOME. Also a video tutorial series with an example project would help people move beyond the basics.
Thanks for all your work and making this free (libre and gratis) program so awesome!
Crashes… crashes… crashes…!
Move a clip? Crash!
Delete a clip? Crash!
Play back a clip? Crash!
It doesn’t help if you make a fancy GUI but have forgotten the very basics of memory management. Has anyone of you ever heard of new and delete operators, pointers, arrays and the like? Do you really care about checking that you are not accessing random memory addresses when doing even the most basic things?
Why on earth do you load all clips into RAM memory? We have SSDs nowadays, what kind of performance improvement do you expect? Opening a project takes forever and quickly clogs up all available memory.
I can work with kdenlive about 2 minutes, then it crashes, followed by 5 minutes required to load the project again. This is not even usable for demonstration purposes!
I’m using 16.08.0 under Ubunti 16.04:
KDE Frameworks 5.18.0
Qt 5.5.1 (compiled against 5.5.1)
xcb window system
Hi Gerhard,
I am going to do some tests and will let you know if it a bug or a packaging issue and we’ll fix it.
Gerhard, please make sure to install libavcodec-ffmpeg-extra56 on Ubuntu, which isn’t installed by default. Without it, all video applications crash that make use of ffmpeg, such as VLC, SMPlayer, and others. This is a Ubuntu issue, not a Kdenlive issue.
BTW, as you are an C++ expert, why don’t you lent us a helping hand? Thank you very much for your cooperation!
I’m afraid my experience is exactly the same on Ubuntu 16.04.
install libavcodec-ffmpeg-extra56
Trying on xubuntu 16.10 same problem, crash crash crash….
every movement crash
What about heading over to the Kdenlive forum (click on link in footer) and asking for help there from people using xubuntu? I can understand you sentiment, but just venting your bad mood without any details won’t buy you any help. Also, “every movement crash” isn’t a helpful description of your issue, unless you’re not interested in getting help. Also, I like to refer you to what Farid replied to another poster: venting your mood in an old post about an outdated release tells us a lot about you; you should have noticed that the most recent front page article is about Kdenlive 16.12.0. Go figure.
You’re right Gerhard, there are a lot of issues about stability not related to codec management. It saturates RAM very quickly and a lot of effects don’t work as expected. Timestamps, edges, zoom, etc. just don’t work.
tested on Lubuntu 17.04 i686
kadenlive 17.04.
You’re commenting on an old version post, which looks odd to phrase it mildly. Use the forum to get help, and describe your project in details. Zoom does work, btw, as I’m using it on a regular basis. I’ve not seen RAN saturation for a long, long timd, so please specify details.
I am very disappointed about dropping support for firewire capture. There are next to no linux editing software that captures HDV that works. Your software (at least back in version .9.10) worked well with my Sony camcorder. Please bring this feature back!
After the refactoring it wasn’t possible to port this due to the lack of manpower…
I have the same wish. Please bring firewire capture feature back….
Using or making a separate, external, software for this task would be better since capturing, today, is an increasingly rare and decaying need. Then, you just import the captured and consolidated material into kdenlive, after that.
It would consume a lot of the developers’ precious time to re-implement such an increasingly unnecessary and niche feature.
Fantastic it. I think Kdenlive walks to be one of the best editors videos… And the best thing about this is that it’s completely open source
system requirements?
I have had excellent experience with 16.08. I was interested to read here about the new Library Widget – the only problem being that I can’t seem to find it anywhere!
Phillip, I will eventually write up here on kdenlive.org a post with details on working with the library widget. For the time being you may want to read my older post about copy and paste between projects using the library. Make sure to display the library pane, using the View menu, where you can show or hide the many different panes Kdenlive has to offer.
Philipp, we now have a dedicated Working with Kdenlive’s Library article in our Toolbox section. This will explain in detail how to work with the library for copy and paste between projects.
When will Kdenlive merge with VideoLAN?… and when will Kdenlive 16.08.0 (and later renditions!) be fully integrated into VideoLAN’s VLC Media Player?
.
Lastly… presently, I have 22 Microsoft Windows 7 Sidebar.exe Micro Slideshow Gadget windows on a 10″ 32bit Acer Aspire One notebook (on a black desktop background), that I use for storyboarding purposes, that will each depict countless images from various pic folders, which represent pic elements within various scenes… that I view, while listening to chosen music videos deemed appropriate for playback with select pics of scenes! And for the latter, I simply copy and paste the URL of Youtube music videos into a notepad file (with ID appended to each URL!); paste chosen MVs into my Google address bar, and hit enter; and then collapse the tab into my taskbar (closing the tab, to stop the MV!).
.
Unfortunately, though, the minimum MSW 7 slideshow rate is one pic every 5 seconds, rather than a preferred minimum movie animation standard of 24 pics every second (let alone, the recent Movie Industry animation standard of 48 pics every second!)!… and!… there is no known Free and Open Source version of MW7′ Sidebar.exe Slideshow Gadget! And re FOSS and FOSH… and pending the release by Intel of the BIOS for the Purism Librem 15!… I would desire a Purism Librem 15 (high end!… with SSD!) to use as a preferred technoma for my work; rather, than continuing with the limitations of Closed Source hardware and software!
.
As multiple micro slideshow gadgets… FOR ME!… are an ESSENTIAL FEATURE for storyboarding (AND STORYBOARDING, IS AN ESSENTIAL FEATURE/ ELEMENT FOR FILMMAKING!), will Kdenlive be looking at the creation of such a slideshow gadget?… and… if so, when will we be seeing such a tool?
.
Again… FOR ME!… developing a rough idea of what images I need for what scenes (coupled, with a rough idea of what music scores I need for various scenes!), is more important at the outset of filmmaking, than jumping into the “nitty gritty” of actually producing original shots and music for a film!… let alone, “parsing”/ editing either the images themselves, or the music scores (although, proceeding to edit a given determined scene, is fine!)! Afterupon alphanumerically coding each image gathered from the Net in each folder, I can simply lay back and run any given slideshow, or group of slideshows, to get a feel for how the “Net pic movie parts” are contributing to the composition of the whole effort! And!… using a Gif Exploder, I can extract images from as many Gifs as I can (as contiguous stock shots are hard to come by!)… and which enables me to construct a scene or scenes in a more seamless manner! And so… I don’t need the intricate mechanics (again, at the outset!) of actual original photoshoots or music production!… or of pic and sound editing of such!… in order to lay out the direction of where I want the film to go! What I need, is a STORYBOARDING TOOL! And that, is a FOSS based, multiple micro slideshow tool!
.
Please!… no emails!
You can try Blender’s new Grease Pencil tool for storyboarding or try to adapt Krita or Mypaint to you workflow. Kdenlive will not merge with VLC nor will it have a storyboarding tool since we already have a planned roadmap till 2017.
Cheers
I think you might misunderstand what I mean by storyboarding!… or– indeed!– what is generally meant by storyboarding! Simply, I don’t need to DRAW anything, to create a storyboard!… my Net pics are my DRAWINGS, and my BOARD is the micro slideshow window in which my pics are displayed (or, I can run a folder’s pics in VLC, photoviewer, or Irfanview… and etc.!… although, this eliminates displaying multiples scenes at once!)! The idea behind storyboarding, is to create a “thumbnail sketch” of my story (metaphorically speaking!), by capturing images (people, and settings!) from the Net, then depicting these in an animated fashion, through a slideshow (the BOARD!)! And I can dump Notepad notes into my pic folders (that won’t be displayed in the slideshows, as these are .txt based!), to outline how I plan to arrange the pics in a more detailed fashion!… and… to word my screenplay!
.
Although hand drawn images used to be used to capture a scene (inasmuch, as doing photoshoots were– and are– costly!), today, one need only grab an available series of Net pics, in order to accomplish the same thing!… and preferably, through a series of micro slideshows (in order to depict as many different scenes as possible!)! But!… the issue is, securing a FOSS based micro slideshow!… and, inasmuch, as Microsoft has ended its support for its Sidebar.exe Slideshow Gadget! And so… I’m unable– e.g.– to lobby MS to increase the number of pics per sec that I’m getting with MSW’ sidebar, without the use of some CSS (Cascading Style Sheet!) script, to overcome MSW’ fps rate!
.
Please!… no emails!
To cut a long story short, you “need […] a storyboarding tool”. As you may have noticed, neither VideoLAN nor Kdenlive are storyboarding tools. VideoLAN is a versatile media player. Kdenlive is a non-linear video (+audio) editor. These tools focus on the core tasks at hand. Moreover, I know that different people do storyboarding quite differently. Maybe if you can offer real funding, someone will be stepping forward and develop such a tool for you.
I think what Kdenlive can initiate itself, is a Crowd Funding campaign (as it would have more “instigating muscle”!… and community support!… than a lone Kdenlive follower!), to facilitate the addition of this needed tool, into its bailiwick! As for me!… I can add the needed prayer!

Really, is kdenlive latest version is released?
It’s my favorite, I am using kdenlive 0.9.x now.
Great news, thanks for the info!
Is it possible to add kdenlive projects (not rendered videos) directly to the timeline? Everytime I try to do it the program crashes. Is there something that I have to do to avoid this?
It should be possible without crash. Which Kdenlive version are you using, and which distribution and version? Can you please run Kdenlive under gdb debugger control to see where the crash happens? Probably we’ll also need a minimum example project triggering the crash so we can reproduce and debug the cause.
Please see here: https://kdenlive.org/bug-reports/
Can you people tell me what version of Linux Mint this piece of garbage works with?
I have tried 17.2, 17.3, 18 & 18.1 and it does not work with any of them!
Crashes all the time and if it does not crash then your HQ clips that you import into a project somehow become corrupted, ugly eye sores that are unusable leaving you with a project that is unusable.
You people go to a lot of trouble updating apiece of garbage that does not work!
1- You are commenting in a 4 month old thread so that tells me a lot about you.
2- We just released the 16.12 version and you can download it by following the instructions in the download page, here is the link since you probably wont find it: https://kdenlive.org/download/
3- You don’t like it don’t use it, if you need help be respectful and you’ll get help. This is free software not a corporation.
4- Dont let the door hit you on your way out.
You are doing it wrong.
I am using Kdenlive on Mint for several years with constant success and no crashes anymore and I’m absolutely loving it. Tremendous thank you to the developers for this gem of a software. Video editors this powerful and easy to use do not go by the zero price usually.
[…]
i like this program but i seem can’t find for the animation the start like more create the words. hm.
Hi. I would love to join a community to help each other with Kdenlive. Is there one?? Where we can chat with eachother? Today I am trying to lower the opacity of a video clip over another and have been attempting to use the “composit” transition, but my Kdenlive keeps saying it “cannot add transition.” Thanks!! Please respond(: Totally appreciate it….
Hello Anna,
We have an IRC channel but it is mostly active for our Kdenlive Cafés (join us). You can contact the team via email or seek help at the official forums or G+ community. Which version of Kdenlive are you using and which Operating System? Check out the download section for an updated version to test in case you aren’t using the latest. 🙂
