In preparation for the 17.12 release we will be holding a mini bug squashing day on the 1st of December, between 10:00 and 15:30 (CET time). Community members are invited to submit their bug suggestions. For developers interested in contributing to the project we have a set up a list of low hanging bugs for them to cherry pick and get acquainted with the code base. Note that this is a great opportunity for prospective participants in the Season of KDE.
During that day, we will be available on IRC in the #kdenlive channel. For those who didn’t follow the recent cafés, Kdenlive’s big refactoring release has been postponed to 18.04, because we haven’t yet reached the required stability to satisfy our growing userbase. This means that Kdenlive 17.12 will be the last release for the old codebase. This bug squash event is an occasion to fix some small issues and improve Kdenlive’s experience for the next 4 months.
Feel free to join us in that effort!
Using more than 1 thread results in the time cursor not being able to point at a certain point. Time cursor stays where it is and just a small gray line appears at the point where I click on the timeline.
GPU is still unusable
Many transitions are not working. When I use them I see one clip and suddenly the next, there is no transition at all.
GPU and multithreading are MLT related issues and we can’t address them. Regarding your transition question you should provide a more detailed explanation of the issue so the devs can reproduce and fix. Make sure to always state the versions of Kdenlive and MLT when doing this.
You are absolutely right about the transitions. I used a couple to see what is happening:
alphaout: gives a black image during the transition
addition: shows both pictures with high brightness
addition_alpha: same as addition
alphaatop: shows the 2nd picture straight away
alphain: keeps showing 1st picture till end of transition
alphaout: black image during transition
alphaover: kind of negative image is shown during transition
alphaxor: black image during transition
burn: 1st picture with a dark overlay of 2nd one
Cairo affine blend: 1st picture till end of transition
Cairo blend: fixed opacity value is all that’s possible
color only: 1st pic – true and neg colors mixed, 2nd pic b/w
darken: 1st pic at bottom (dark) – 2nd neg colors on top
difference: psychedelic combo of both pictures
And the list goes on.
If you like I can send you screendumps of each transition to make it more clear what I mean with my description. Just send me an address I can send this to.
Kdenlive: 18.03.70
MLT: 6.5.0
KDE Frameworks: 5.40.0

At first, you’re doing a really great job. I love KDENLIVE and at the moment working with 17.12 / Windows 10.
I found a small error in 17.08 as well as 17.12..
If you add clips the file-browser has a small error at Windows 10. E.g. if you go to root (C:) then the folders there are not listened correctly.
Maybe you should use this component (I use in C#)…

Merry Christmas…

DeMus is right.
Go to settings -> Environment -> MLT-Environment -> Threads and set it to a value greater than one (I know, there is note about experimental state).
Close KDEnlive and start it again. Open a project and try to select a timestamp for the project monitor. It will not work. Only a grey line will be placed but not the viewpoint for the project monitor.
Good to know, which setting causes it…
I agree with the other two, Kdenlive should have better multicore support. Shotcut uses MLT and has stable multicore (for the most part).
I’ll sit this one out. 🙂
On atend toujours que se logiciel va prendre une stabilité fameuses
When I do Select All on the video fragments/clips in my Timeline and move them, then save the file, exit, restart, sometimes the clips are apart from one another with big time holes (i.e. no content) in between them. Sometimes that action also changes the order of the clips as well, such as placing a bitmap image appearing at the end somewhere in the middle of the Timeline.
I’m using an AppImage of version 17.08.3. Thus far I’ve been really pleased with it since the version that came out before this one crashed just about every time I did a bunch of Undo/Redo steps. Version 17.08.3 doesn’t have this issue.
It is just this one issue with the current version that makes me not want to use Select All, save and then exit the application (when I need to work on the video later on), but instead just leave my computer on or suspended.
I need to do the Select All action because it seems Kdenlive doesn’t have a Timeline ripple function, so that when you delete a clip it automatically moves the clips to the right of it adjacent to the last clip on the left. That’s a pretty standard feature for movie editors so I’m not sure why Kdenlive doesn’t have it.
Thank you for such an excellent video editor though. I’ll donate when I can in the future!
You might be experiencing what seems to be a timeline corruption bug. This kind of issues will get fixed after the refactoring is complete. (Due in 4 months time.)
Are you using by any chance the speed effect? Also another reason for this corruption to happen is if you select many clips, drag them and stop without releasing the left-mouse button, then dragging them again and then releasing.
Meanwhile the next release is due on the 14th with even more stabilization and improvements.
Hey thanks for responding!
I’m not using the Speed effect.
Are you saying dragging the multiple clips past how far they can really go (and thus not moving into the clip left of it but the mouse is still going) while still holding down the left mouse button?
It’s OK though, my workaround is to manually drag each clip individually. It’s a bit of a drag (excuse the pun) but it’s doable.
Will Kdenlive ever get a Timeline ripple function like I described in my original post, or if it has one where can I find it? If not, why doesn’t it have this function if that’s not too forward a question?
There are known issues that cause these corruptions:
Maybe you just found a new corruption method or reproduced a known one, either way this will all be fixed after the refactoring.
After the refactoring we will start work on advanced trimming tools which will attend your needs. If you go through some of the news of the website you can find more information on that.
On the 15th we will have our monthly Kdenlive Café, join us.
Cheers
Thank you!
By the way if you ever need testimonials for Kdenlive I’d love to write one! Never again another video editor for me!
I want to do a section of interviews of power users (kind of what Krita does) but wont be able to start it until next year. Hi, what kind of background do you have, are you an editor? If so, more feedback on features and workflows is always appreciated. PS tonight we are having our monthly meeting if you’d like to join. 😉
OK well I don’t know if this answers your question but here goes.
I use Kdenlive for my daily YouTube videos (I run three channels with a fourth one on the way). I don’t know if I’m a power user, in general I am but not for Kdenlive I think. My GUI is set up very simple, with the Timeline preview monitor as the largest space on the left side, the Project Bin docked on the right side, with below it Properties, and below that Clip Properties. At the bottom sits the Timeline spanning completely from left to right. I’ve stripped the GUI of all buttons and run the app in fullscreen without a menu showing. Yeah I guess I’m a power user, I just don’t use any of the effects because I don’t really have a need for them and my comp is too slow for it anyway (Intel Core m3-6Y30 in a fanless ultrabook). I did recently discover the non-GPU based fade to black which is very nice and easy on CPU resources. But that and audio fade in and out is all I use. I work with MTS files from a Sony Handycam which I stitch to M2TS first with tsMuxer and then convert the files to MP4 (in Kdenlive) and then I that file as my source which I can edit. (MT2S files are slooow in Kdenlive and have keyframe issues (too much to get into here)). But that is my work flow basically.
My background is in IT. I’m a former WordPress site builder, hand coder, and graphics designer in 2D, 2.5D and 3D. I’ve also been a beta tester for Macromedia (now merged with Adobe) and Google.
Does that suffice? 🙂
are you going to do it again ?
We sure are, stay tuned for the next one. But if you are interested in contributing you can just contact us via mailing list and we’ll guide you. 🙂
It’s great to see Kdenlive being so actively maintained and further developed! In my opinion the most promising video editor on Linux at the moment.
I hope you can enhance Chroma key. The boundaries have the chroma color most of the time, and the “Key spill mob up” filter is not useful and complicated. I believe this is a main issue in Kdenlive, and it will be good if more professional chroma key is available.
Also I had problem when dealing with JPG images, I had to convert them to PNG.
It’s great news. Previously I suggest this application to many people and now they will get help after reading this news. Personally, I love this application and always want to suggest other.
