The last months for Kdenlive have been very quiet from the outside – we were not very active on the bugtracker, did not make a lot of announcements, and the 17.12.x release cycle only contained very few minor bugfixes.
The main reason for this was the huge work that went behind the scenes for a major code refactoring that was required to allow further developments. So after more than a year working on it, we hope to get ready for the 18.04 release!
Tonight we will announce the first public testing beta release for the upcoming 18.04 version. There are some rough edges, it’s not ready for production yet as compatibility with older project files is not finalized and a lot of work is still required to fix the many remaining quirks, but we are on good tracks to bring you a modern, stable and enjoyable open source editor.
So if you are interested and want to have a look at our roadmap or try the latest development code in an AppImage, join us tonight at 9pm (CET time – UTC+1) for our 26th Kdenlive Café.

I sometimes use kdenlive 17.12 and I’m waiting to see what the new 18.04 brings. A lot of inspiration kdenlive 🙂
Currently 18.04 has a few minor bug fixes, and that is it. I’m quite bummed.

As you can see some minor bug fixes and that is it
Will the transcript from the café be published here?

What can we expect from “major code refactoring”?
I would love to see performance improvements. Imo playback performance is still too slow compared to other NLEs.
Is this something that might be adressed with the code refactoring?
The code refactoring will be to make it easier to debug/solve bugs as well as adding new features like advanced editing functions. The performance you refer to is technically an MLT issue, we need more people involved in that project.
Any way to support MLT financial?
I would love to spend money for a good FOSS NLE and ditch Adobe’s software.
Please head over to https://mltframework.org/ and geht in contact with the MLT devs. They should know best how to proceed.
I like to test the actual beta on Windows 7. How can I dot that?
Go to the link above that says “Download”, and go to the bottom where it says “Windows”. There you can download the Kdenlive version for Windows, but read the installation instructions that it says there, because in Windows you have to install FFmpeg separately.
Here are the steps to follow in a video: https://youtu.be/eYVD0I0lWAM
Greetings and that goes well :-).
Hi Ryu. Thanks for the detailed instruction. I downloaded and installed the actual 17.12.0 Windows version including FFMPEG already. Runs well on Win 7 and Win 10.
What I meant is testing/have a look on the actual refactoring beta 18.04/18.08 on Windows 7 but the file/program is available as AppImage only. How to run AppImage on Win 7?
AppImage is for linux
This I know. This is why I ask how to convert/run an AppImage on Win7. Or does the developer team have to convert into a Windows exe first?
I think it’s hard for us to make AppImage in .exe
I do not know if you can convert an Appimage to an .exe, but I really doubt it, and there is also no public version of the Kdenlive beta 18.04 / 18.08 for Windows. I assume that when the refactoring version is finished, then it will be ported for Windows.
If you want to try the branch of refactorization from Windows, there are only two ways that I know. Install Linux on a virtual machine or install Linux on a Pendrive (Live USB).
Greetings. 🙂
I have installed VirtualBox and Ubuntu 17.10 on my Win7. Now I can run the refactoring branch 18.08 beta0. Thanks for advice.
The easiest way (without using the Terminal) is this: https://youtu.be/KiehhZ6Wb-4
The branch of refactorization (kdenlive 18.08 beta0) reproduces me the videos in the timeline with a lot of delay (lag). I have doubts if it is my PC or it is still not very mature. If the same thing happens to you, tell me to get out of this doubt, please.
Greetings. 🙂
Thanks for the tip about making AppImage executable.
I tried Lubuntu 17.10 in the VirtualBox which is much more performant then Ubuntu. Yes, with Ubuntu it’s much choppier. It’s difficult to say because I run Kdenlive in a virtual machine which is not that performant then Kdenlive direct on Windows.
I think we have to open a tread in the general Kdenlive forum to discuss further.
Thanks for telling me and confirming it. Regarding the opening of a thread in the forum, I have seen that developers are using this site to report errors.
Greetings.
Sorry here is the website:
https://phabricator.kde.org/T7082
I Checked with Lubuntu 17.10 in the VirtualBox on Win7. Kdenlive 17.12.0 vs 18.08.beta0 with FullHD clips 50fps. Scrubbing and playing on 17.12.0 is smoother (like direct in Win7) as 18.08.beta0. So it’s not your PC.
Ubuntu 17.10 in VirtualBox on Win7 is slow and I even cannot start Kdenlive.
OK, Thanks, what’s left is to wait for the version to mature. They have already announced the next Cafe, so I’ll see what the developers say. By the way I use Ubuntu Mate.
Greetings and many thanks to tell me. 🙂
Is here someone, who use “crop/scale/rotate” effect on actual archlinux? On my computer effect does nothing…
