While our team is working on the awaited refactoring, we still managed to add 2 small usability improvements in the 18.04.1. version. First the safe zone overlay was improved so you can now easily spot the center of your frame:
Then we improved the default background color for the titler so that white text can easily be read without having to make further adjustments.
These changes were made during our great Paris sprint. At the same time, we are improving our packaging efforts, so you can find the following download options right now (besides official distro packages):
- AppImage: the latest 18.04.1 version is available, now with support for Ladspa plugins
- Flatpak: we are glad to announce the availability of Kdenlive on flathub, so it can now easily be installed on distributions supporting flatpak (thanks to Peter Eszlari).
- Windows: Vincent Pinon worked on an update to the Windows version, so windows users can now test the latest 18.04.1.
Head to the download section for install instructions.
That’s great! Thank you!
Much love for Windows build.
GPU Acceleration for Windows?
This is on the road map, for the long term: https://kdenlive.org/en/2018/05/kdenlive-paris-sprint-lgm-report/
Nvenc in kdenlive is fantastic, maybe gtx 660/670 is match better. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XT08k1gPKzqDUf-qwS20HjtCjHAgqX31
see here how to make custom export profiles accelerated nvenc
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1d08FHoQ9VOAJzguR7YPtYvpq5YKFbGoq
Exact bitrate export cpu only, if you do not have gpu compatible
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1m6b4X-ybTyQwLPKALwR_GVYYeViO-mrQ
Frame stepping in this version (via the arrow keys) no longer lets me hear the audio belonging to that frame. Bug?
Also, where are Kdenlive’s configuration files located? I thought I had them but they don’t affect the panel layout in new installs.
Many thanks!
Better multi-core support when editing? MLT team has finally awaken in 2018 and it has improved multi-threading on kdenlive a little bit. Maybe you guys could design something after the refactoring is finish to help the MLT engine handle multiple threads when editing. My i7 6950x needs some challenge.
I was a little disappointed when kdenlive dropped the snap package, but to be honest I’m not a big fan of something that silently updates. I like to know what’s new so that I can immediately start using the new wonderful things you make. The news that you know support flatpak heals the tiny wounds, and it’s even better than snaps as flatpak updates nicely integrates with the software manager. Thank you very much!
Btw… if I wanted to donate directly to kdenlive, are the kdenlive devs available for recurrent donations somewhere?
Que genial el cambio con el texto, se le agradece un montón 😀
kdenlive can’t save project correctly on linux mint 18.3. Project can only be saved automatically on random folder name in ‘run/user/1000/doc/…’. I think this only happens on linux mint :/
This seems like something is wrong with your system. Try using the AppImage and see if it happens.
Kdenlive 18.04.1 continuosly crashes with gpu on on my popOs with a GeForce GTX 1070!! And the appimmage does not support gpu acceleration! help!!
GPU acceleration is still an experimental feature so don’t expect it t work for production. You can help debug it and report bugs and eventually might get fixed. Now all focus is on finishing the refactoring.
I do not use gpu acceleration from the Settings/Playback editor, I use only export custom nvenc profile and it works ok. I tried VCE for AMD but still not.
But NVENC’s export speed is super, but the effects & corrections do not support NVENC.
How to write these profiles attach the picture: [redacted]
I really would like to try these profiles with GTX 1070 and write us, Thanks.
Constantin, I highly appreciate your post. Unfortunately, posting arbitrary links to downloads poses a security and liability thread to us and our site visitors. For this reason we cannot publish such links. But, what about publishing your profile as a Gist on GitHub (or GitLab, if you rather prefer that) and then post a link here to the Gist page on GitHub or GitLab? This allows reader to check before downloading. Also, this ensures that the link will stay alive for a long time.
Please consider support for 360 movies production (stabilization, rotation (level correction), observer view flow, stitching). I use Kdnlive for that purpose, but I need to handle many tasks outside this application.
Hi, we actually didn’t even discuss this during the sprint and can’t recall anyone ever mentioning it in forums or mailing list. Maybe you can help write a specification for doing this and your needs s that it might get added to the roadmap, eventually.
In the 360 subject…, that will be more and more popular (not mentioning 360 3D…). I have made a document with some most needed features and how it could work from user perspective. Please, feel free to use it for the project: [redacted]
Peter, I highly appreciate your work. However, I would like to ask you to use the available Phabricator infrastructure instead of posting links. Since we cannot check links and guarantee that they are safe, even over time, please understand that links to arbitrary document locations cannot be published as part of comments.
The DiveO, could you provide me information where do I find that Phabricator system for kdenlive? I’am not familiar with KDE related development processes.
Hi Peter, please head over to https://phabricator.kde.org/tag/kdenlive/ and create a new KDE login if not done so (should be painless I hope). The existing future ideas might give you an idea how you can add your ideas here, such as https://phabricator.kde.org/T5661 for example. When in doubt, please don’t hesitate to ask on the mailing list, send I’m sure that not least Farid will help you getting started with Phabricator.
To give ideas in Phabricator, do you have to be a programmer, or can any user do it? How do you prefer them to do it?
You don’t need to be a programmer, and in fact Phabricator is not so much a bug tracker as rather also a feature board and tracker. I suggest you look through what’s already filed on Phabricator to get an idea how it is used and also to see whether some of your ideas might already in discussion.
I have created quite large number of tasks related with spherical video feature, also providing references between them and other tasks.
Thanks.
Perfect, there is an idea that I would like to share.
Thank you very much as always.
Kdenlive does not work on Deepin 15.5, if I try to save some work, the application simply freezes.
Which version of Kdenlive are you using? Have you tried the AppImage?
On Windows 7, Kdenlive 18.04.1 process remains active in the background after closing the application. A new process is created each time the application is launched, and all of these accumulate, holding memory and file handles until system eventually becomes unstable due to lack of free resources. Other than that, this is a great build!
This is a known issue and is being worked on. Note that the Windows version is still in a Beta state.
Work around: create a batch to kill all running processes after you close Kdenlive. See here: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=265&t=142662
Everything works well on the beautiful, amazing, perfect and almighty WINDOWS. Kdenlive-team thanks for this great software & BILL GATES thanks for your glorious and top-quality OS.
on kdenlive, when i put a video on the timeline, there is a dark green screen instead of the desired video. how do i fix this? i’m on a windows 7 laptop with a core i7 processor
I downloaded 18.04.1
Setup a simple test:
-Three images on three different video tracks
-One title clip
-Did a fade from black
When I play, as soon as the play head reaches the fade ins, KDENLive exits. I assume its crashing.

Downloaded the AppImage of ver 18.04.1. One little bug, it complains that the vorbis codec is missing. The codec is installed on my system. How do I get the appimage to recognize it? Tried running config wizard, shows same error.

Filename is “kdenlivesettings” (see the root directory).
AppImage ver 18.04.1 edited project flawlessly. But then would not render. Tried going into scripts folder and running scripts. Says invalid command /tmp/……
