Usually the point releases are for bugfixes but Kdenlive 20.08.2 comes with a set of changes worthy of a major release. Besides some memory leak fixes and usability improvements this versions brings back the automatic scene split feature, adds for the Linux version experimental GPU rendering profiles for rendering, proxy creation and timeline preview rendering (Windows will follow at a later stage) and a new crop effect. Other noteworthy changes are better handling of projects with missing clips, improved project loading and fixes incorrect volume meters in audio mixer. The Windows version gets 45 new audio LADSPA effects (CMT) and 3 video frei0r effects (Cairo).
But the best thing really is that this release has many commits from new contributors. Come join the effort in making the best FLOSS video editor in the world. 🙂
Automatic Scene Split
The Automatic scene split features allows you to detect different scenes of your clip and either split them into subclips or add markers to it. You can access this feature by right clicking on a clip in the project bin then go to clip jobs

It gets me an install error on Ubuntu 20.4.1:

I have tried to install from the following PPA: ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable
It is not installing from the official PPA
I’m getting the following error while trying to reinstall this version (because apt immediately told me kdenlive was a broken package)
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/kdenlive_4%3a20.08.2~ubuntu20.04.1_amd64.deb: trying to overwrite ‘/usr/share/metainfo/org.kde.kdenlive.appdata.xml’, which is also in package kdenlive-data 4:20.08.2~ubuntu20.04.1
This is apparently a packaging error.
The following error occured during installation on Kubuntu Focal Fossa through the stable PPA:

Re-updated APT 1 hour later, now it works!
Thank you!
Expecting “multiple timelines” option in one project, in upcoming version.
When I import an image, it doesn’t get loaded in properly, and when I try to do anything with it, it hangs. Any idea what’s going on?
I think I found the culprit.
It was because either the folder all of the project files were in and the project file itself, and/or just the project file, had a name starting with a symbol. A ‘+’ to be specific. Changing the name/s solved it.
But now I can’t replicate it even if I add the ‘+’ back, so maybe it was just a one off random glitch.
I can’t add a clip or zone from the clip monitor to the timeline. This works for me in version 20.04. It broke in 20.08.1 and 20.08.2. I filed a bug report but it seems to have disappeared after one email reply from Jean Baptiste saying that it worked for him. The bug tracker doesn’t say that it was resolved. I just disappeared.
Hi, could you please try to find the issue? Did you post it at invent or bugzilla?
I checked here…
https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=20.08.1&list_id=1800059
with the search term 20.08.1 and saw 2 issues but not the one I posted.
I can add clips from the Project window to the timeline but not from the clip window to the timeline.
Turns out it was just a change in the user interface. Works fine. Thanks!
Hello, when I deal with hundreds of clips, I often use cross-fade, can it be achieved on the same track? Rather than cross-fade up and down.
We try to implement same track transition with version 20.12.
Yeah! Automatic splits are back! Thanks!
AppImage has broken theme and localization
Delete kdenlive-appimagerc. See here https://community.kde.org/Kdenlive/Configuration
Cool, thanks for your great work!
Probably the only reason I don’t use regularly Kdenlive is slider. it is too unpredictable. When I click under tracks it moves away, then I have to find again the spot I wanted to edit. I find it very frustrating. When I work with Hitfilm Express, all this troubles are gone. Is it only me? I am very happy and grateful for all the improvements and functions that are added to app with every new version, but I am a simple guy and I need a reliant text editor (still in progress) and a slider that it is visible and controllable.
Do you mean the timeline sliders? If so, yes this is still an issue https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kdenlive/-/issues/593
yes, timeline slider. Thank you.

Hi, thank you for this new release again! Great job! Two findings:
1. Transcode options are missing from both the context menu of clips in the project bin and from the kdenlive settings window also.
2. If I change the monitor config (either to real time or to drop frames) when a clip is loaded, kdenlive will hang. I can change it forth and back withouth any issue if there are no clips to monitor.
I’m on windows 10.
Will this software support GPU acceleration? Are you planning to add this feature?
Gpu encoding works ok, you need Arch linux KDE operating system, maybe Kubuntu or Manjaro or Pop-Os KDE, nvidia needs proprietary drivers.
Using Ubuntu Nvidia (1050) software version 450.
Lock the computer.
– Create proxy
– render
On timeline when selecting ‘thumbnails for all frames’ it always shows wrong images after a clip has been cut and its speed changed. Timeline still shows the right images if only in/out frames are selected to show.
Hi. Tell me please.
Why was deleted effect “motion tracker” ? Was added “auto mask”? But Is its functionality able to replace “motion tracker” ?
Thanks, for your understanding.
Additional Information:
*.flatpack for Manjaro, *.standalone for Windows – motion tracking effect available.
*.appimage for linux is not.
Why is this done?
Hey.
My question is resolved. After the flatpak update from 08/20/3, the program changed the version of MLT 6.21.0 and the “Motion Tracking” effect became available again.
In the program version 20.08.2 (official repository), the MLT version is 6.23.0.
It is interesting, that the effect is present in the program version 20.08.1 with the MLT 6.23.0 version.
But in 08.20.2 it is not.
Where can I download the 20.04 AppImage version please? It is gone from the downloads server. Thanks.
Here : https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release
This release is amazing on Windows! Made a full video yesterday with 0 issues whatsoever. Just donated!
I had downloaded 2011.70 a few months ago to try it. It worked ok on my laptop. i tried the latest version and the splash screen showed up, It starts to open then shuts down.
I tried to use KDE to report the problem, but can’t get past the security. I really don’t like the KDE interface. The development version is certainly coming along well, except for this latest snafu.
Cheers
Hello,
I moved from ubuntu 18.04 (where kdenlive worked fine) to 20.04. Kdenlive 20.04 was automatically installed and it don’t work at all. It crash at any action. Importing a clip, duplicate or rename a clip title, or any other action. It is a disaster.
Where can I download the previous releases of kdenlive please?
Please use the actual AppImage 20.08.2 from the download site. It seems that Kdenlive was not correct compiled.

Hey there, great software. I have been using kdenlive for over a year now and enjoy using it. However, I have come across an issue with version 20.08.3. I am running this in Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon.
When I try to change the Custom Project Folder under the Project Settings, the software just hangs/freezes. It doesn’t allow me to do anything. I then have to close my laptop down to enable me to re-start kdenlive.
This issue did not occur in the previous version 20.08.2 or previous versions. Just wondering how I go about getting this issue resolved or if any user out there has encountered this as well and how they went about resolving this.
Should not happen. As the AppImage 20.08.3 is not out so you could have a test, please go back to version 20.8.2.
Hey all, thanks a lot for this amazing software! I’m amazed at all Kdenlive can do and I am still learning the tools that can deliver amazing stuff!
One thing I would like to know is about being able to open .xml timelines from other NLE software inside Kdenlive. I tried opening an .xml timeline from a different software I was using before (Davinci), but Kdenlive automatically crashes. I’m using version 20.08.02 for Windows.
I would like to suggest for users being able to choose between various colors to set on each video and audio track. That makes viewing the timeline better to know what is in there such as specific scenes, SFX, music, etc. (e.g. green for SFX, orange for music, blue for scene 1, yellow for scene 2)
That’s all for now. Thanks 🙂
OpenTimelineIO for import/export XML is not working under Windows at the moment. Work to fix it is still ongoing.
Do you mean apply a color the whole track including the track header?
Oh I see. I saw the OpenTimelineIO for import/export XML options and tried them out but there was an error. Do you have any idea when or in which upcoming version of Kdenlive it will be available for Windows?
If you mean track header as being the track title/name (video, music, etc.) then no, It’s already transparent and it looks nice. I mean only the track background color to organize better when separating and organizing the timeline, especially in big projects.
Thank you so much.
OpenTimelineIO: difficult to say. Maybe in version 21.04.
I see version 20.08.3 is already avilable in the folder. Is that released or is still under development/testing?
L’ajout de vitesse variable avec images clĂ©s est très attendu.
Dans des effets : possibilité de créer un tracé dynamique avec image clé sera un bon outil.

Wow, just been upgraded by Ubuntu Studio 20.04 to KDEnlive 20.08.3 and the GUI is such a vast improvement.
I love the tabbed workspaces (Log, Edit, Audio, etc). I have always favoured this approach which reminds of the Avid GUI. Avoids unnecessary clutter and you have just the tools you need for a given stage in the processing of the job.
Superb job!
