We are happy and proud to announce the release of Kdenlive 19.04 refactored edition concluding a 3 year cycle in which more than 60% of the code base was changed with +144,000 lines of code added and +74,000 lines of code removed. This is our biggest release ever bringing new features, improved stability, greater speed and last but not least maintainability (making it easier to fix bugs and add new features).
New refactored timeline
Split Audio/Video
We have changed the way timeline tracks work. Each track is now either audio or video, and will only accept audio and video clips respectively. When dragging an AV clip from the project bin in timeline, the clip will be automatically split, the video part going on a video track, and the audio part on an audio track.
Configurable layout
Tracks can be individually resized. (Holding down shift makes all video or audio tracks change in height simultaneously.)
Switch live between two different layout modes (Mixed or Split).
Keyboard Navigation
You now have the possibility to move clips and compositions with your keyboard. To do it, select a clip in timeline and use the “Grab Current Item” (Shift+G) function from the Timeline menu.
You can then move the item with your arrow keys. Keyframes can also be moved individually. Just click on a keyframe in timeline, then move it left/right with arrows, change its value with + and -. Alt+arrow to go to another keyframe.
Improved keyframe handling
- Add a new keyframe by double clicking in timeline.
- You can move a keyframe without altering it’s value by using the vertical line that appears when you are above or below a keyframe.
- Remove a keyframe by dragging it far above or below the clip limits.
Audio Recording
An option in track headers allows you to have audio record controls. This enables you to play your project while recording a voice over comment. Very handy for making tutorials. (Not available in the AppImage version yet.)
Other improvements
- Configurable thumbnails for each track. You can choose to display between In frame, In/Out frames, All frames or No thumbnails.
- Improved workflow due to keyboard shortcuts and track targets.
- Added group hierarchy (group of groups).
- You can now copy/paste timeline clips between different projects (if you have 2 running instances of Kdenlive or after opening a different project) using the standard copy/paste.
- Clip name always displayed when scrolling.
- Individual clips can now be disabled while still in the timeline but with no audio and no video – (works for all clip types)
- Faster timeline preview with support for hardware accelerated encoding.
- Improved feedback on move/resize.
- Automatic timeline color switch when changing the color theme.
- When using the Razor tool (x), you can now press shift while moving the mouse cursor over a clip to preview the cut frame.
Project Bin
- Improve management of proxy clips (can now be deleted for each clip).
- Shortcut icon to drag only the audio or only the video of a clip in timeline.
- Improved management of audio/video streams, also allowing to enable/disable audio or video for a clip.
Monitors
- Monitor toolbar: move with the mouse to the upper right corner of the monitor to access the toolbar.
- Support multiple guide overlays.
- Shortcut icon in clip monitor to drag only the audio or only the video of a clip in timeline.
- Support for external monitor display using Blackmagic Design decklink cards.
Effects and Compositions
- Major improvements to the Speed effect.
- Added back the Motion Tracker. (For compiled MLT versions with OpenCV support only.)
- You can now define preferred effects and compositions. These will appear in the timeline context menus and in the effect/composition baskets for easier access.
- Organized effects under 3 categories, “Main” (which contains the most important audio/video effects), “Video effects” and “Audio effects”.
- Tested and removed all effects which are not working.
- When dragging a composition from the list into timeline, it will automatically adjust its duration (to fit the entire clip or the duration of a clip overlap depending on the context).
- Move the whole Rotoscoping mask at once. Moving all points in the mask: A cross is displayed at the center of all points that allows moving the whole mask.
- 1 click transitions
Titler
- Added configurable visual guides.
- Visualize missing elements, allowing to move or delete them.
- A combobox allows you to choose the default background, between checkered, black and white.
- Align buttons now cycle to allow you to align to safe margins and frame border instead of just frame border.
Rendering
- Added support for HW accelerated render profiles. (Experimental)
- Added support to render with a transparent background for export formats that support alpha channel. (Experimental)
Resources
Since a long time, Kdenlive allowed users to download extra user contributed resources from the KDE Store. These download options have now been moved to more logical places instead of the “Settings” menu. Title templates can be downloaded from the Titler dialog, Render profiles from the Render dialog, Luma compositions from the Composition list and Shortcut layouts from the Shortcuts dialog.
But…
There is still work to be done! We concentrated on stability (finding and fixing as many crashes as possible) and that the most important functionality for a slim editing workflow works. There are still known issues in which we will dedicate the next 3 monthly releases of the 19.04 cycle to finish polishing the rough edges.
So why release? Well, this version is much better than the old one. Having it out in the wild will help us test it under various situations. We now have a stable platform allowing us to fix issues quicker in order to move on to adding new features.
What’s next?
For 19.08 we hope to merge the refactoring of the Titler, a GSOC project, and begin implementing the professional features in our roadmap starting with advanced trimming tools. Work also has started to improve OpenGL support (better GPU usage) so this year is promising to be the foundation for entering into professional video editing waters. Stay tuned!
Thanks, great work! I’ll test, when available in opensuse repos.
Congratulations!
Excellent work! I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for an update.
Hello,
2 observations here. First one, AFTER cutting and deleting a section of a clip, “Fade from Black” won’t work if I want to add one.
Second, when moving the timeline cursor with the “Home” and “End” keys, the timeline slider won’t follow, so I have to manually slide it with my mouse.
Only for the first reason, I have to step back to 18.04.
Thanks.
First: Fade from black and to black: hover with the mouse on the top left/right corner of the clip and grab the “circle” and pull it inwards.
Second: try with CTRL + END, CTRL + HOME
For the first one, it worked. Thank you very much. But for the second one, no. CTRL+END (or only END) and CTRL+HOME (or only HOME) do move the timeline cursor to the end or home but the timeline slider doesn’t follow the cursor as it was in previous versions.
Thank you anyway. I appreciate.
This works for fade to black, but not for fade from black: there simply is no circle on my clip in the left hand side, top corner when I hover; but one appears on the right hand side corner when I hover, and I can make adjustments. Handy. But fade from black, not so much.
I wish this would work. I’m in linux, and even tried removing the .kdenlive and other ‘kdenlive’ directories in my home directory, and that made no difference at all when I started a new project from scratch.
For me it crashes when trying to load latest project.
Could you upload your project file somewhere? Or open a bug (there you can attach), then we can check.
Thanks a lot. However, I cant seem to find the Speed effect in this version with the AppImage. What happened??
I found it. You have to right click on the clip and click Change Speed.
Will the speed effect ever be keyframable??
This is a long time wish but it depends on MLT and not on Kdenlive. Lets see if we can implement.
Great news!!!…. thank you
Thank you so much for your work. I’ve been waiting for a release with the refactoring branch since it was announced.
when its expected to windows ?
I also want to know if there is a chance for windows versions.
Windows 19.04.0 version is available. Check the download page.
What is windows?
Thanks for your work, very good editing software. I’m missing one little thing, it’s the multi-camera management with the function ” memorizing the editing by click “(option I knew under a old premiere). Do you think this is possible to do in the future? Thank you again!
“Faster timeline preview with support for hardware accelerated encoding.”
Is this feature in the Appimage version, or only when it is compiled?
Gracias por el increíble trabajo que han hecho!!! ?
Very excellent! Thank you so much for all good work you guys are doing!
Congratulations, and thank you so much to the Kdenlive team!!! Can’t wait to try this out. 🙂
Great work! Only one BIG thing is missing! Multicam Support as in Magix ProX. Hope it comes sometime!
how about LUTs in new kdenlive?
There is an effect called Apply LUT.
Where? There’s no Apply LUT effect anymore in 19.04. There was one in 18.12 but it’s gone now or maybe was it renamed under a new name?
It’s under „show all video effects“ (the film strip icon)/color.
You’re right! Since it’s not activated by default, I couldn’t see it. Thanks a lot. It’s appreciated!
I’m trying to use it but nothing happend when I select a LUT effect
Do I forget something?
There are 2 LUT effects: “Apply LUT” and “LUT1D”. LUT1D seems broken. “Apply LUT” needs a LUT file to work with.
In windows why i can’t activate the use of gpu? I have the latest nvidia drivers but is not working.
GPU effects is still unstable and not ready for prime time. Work is being done on that front though.
Ok.Thank you!
Since latest update to 19.04.0 I see no longer thumbnails of the keyframe in the timeline as like in previous versions, even on zoom level 21 and activated in the timeline menu. So I cant edit & cut anything.
Please bring back the old bevaviour.
How did you install the latest version? This seems to be an MLT issue. Are you using MLt 6.14 or greater? Try using the AppImage or Flatpak and see.
I’m facing the same issue.
Using the latest AppImage 19.04.1
Without having the thumbnails, editing and cutting isn’t possible
Try AppImage 19.04.1c and/or delete Kdenliverc (https://community.kde.org/Kdenlive/Configuration).
Hi,
first of all I want to says thanks to everyone who work hard to publish this awesome update.
So to be clear, I run kdenlive-19.04.0-2.exe on a Windows 10, but I have a big issue that is very annoying: I can’t see the icons, so I have a lot of empty squares that I don’t know what they do. So do you have a solution or this a problem that will need to be fixed in a future update.
Thanks
Goto: settings -> untick „force breeze icon theme“. Kdenlive restarts and you should see the icons.
In windows 10 64 bits , the 19.04 version the menu bar doesnt work when i enter in fullscreen mode.
Any sugestions to solve the bug ?
That’s Good!
In the most of Linux Video Editors, We notice that the texts are handled like a picture,
So we can’t play dynamically with it, such as adding some animation effects to the characters of a word!
For example in [Adobe Premiere Pro] we can do this easly! Also in [DAVINCI RESOLVE 15].
and all animations is keyframeble.
You can add some plug-ins like Mister Horse, and make this effects easy to use!
You can get the IDEA by looking at this site https://misterhorse.tv/products/text-presets/42
Or this Gif Image https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/18173275/55924510-0f6cf680-5c02-11e9-9985-fe3b15867fed.gif
Thank You
We are going to refactor the Titler and hopefully this things can be added eventually.
sound recording does not work on ubuntu. it just do nothing, looks like microphone is not reachable.
I dont get to to move clip with audio between tracks, before it was very handy to cut large clip into small one and drog to difference tracks, after join or edit and that is it.
now track can be green marked, can be activated, when I am trying to add new audio track after V1, it puts it as A2, and rename A2 to A1 below V2…. WTF?
Hi,
I tested the new version of kdenlive on windows 10 for a while and I found two problems and I want to know if I am the only one to have thoses:
-The context menu appear just under the mouse so it’s impossible to use it
-It’s impossible to change the duration of a clip with the “Edit duration” tool
– Do you mean this yellow flyout when you hover over a icon?
– Thank you for reporting the duration problem. I opend an issue.
Windows version “fade to black” and “fade from black” not working properly. It is difficult to add effect by “hand” and also when trying to insert it on a clip. I experienced this issues trying to edit multiple clips on the same video track.
Fade from black and to black: hover with the mouse on the top left/right corner of the clip and grab the “circle” and pull it inwards. -> Do you have done that way?
Yes, but sometimes there is a circle and sometimes not. And if I grab an effect and land it on the clip, it is sometimes not responsive to set the length, it stays on zero …
PS. I think for commenting and discussions would be easier to form a closed Facebook group or something like that
Kdenlive is on Telegram: https://t.me/kdenlive
This broke all of my projects. Just completely derailed my project at work.
You can download trusty 18.2.1 as an appimage form here which is what I had to do to keep working. See here:
https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/
You will most likely have to uninstall any local install of Kdenlive for the appimage to work, mind. I did but everything since has been sweet.
The Kdenlive team have said they reckon 19.04 is going to take time to bed in and iron out the bugs. As least there is a way back and thank the Kdenlive team for that.
Hi, never update any program in the middle of a project. Can you explain what broke?
This update turned out to be a disaster for me. From one of my favorite programs for years to a program where nothing works. Everything is changed, away are the buttons. When I want to composite and transform I have no idea how I can see the end of the timeline or how to ad a keyframe , I’ve tried everything. And the list goes on and on. I think you tried to make it easier to work with but you went to far in that. People who have worked with this program for years can’t accomplish the simpliest things.
I had Kdenlive fall over on me after the update came down for KDE Neon. Broke my projects and had so many bugs it seemed to be beta software AND I had urgent cutting work to do for presentations at the local University! [Er, it MIGHT actually have been Beta software in Neon since the code came down on the 12th ahead of the formal release date of April 18th.]
Anyway, with work pressing and a complex cut I was not going to lose due to a massive change in the system… I found the previous version as an appimage and now run that. I had to uninstall Kdenlive completely first for the appimage to work but now I am back running on stable 18.12.1. I will wait to complete my work and give 19.04 time to bed down and then check it out further.
You can download from here:

Hi, sorry but I cannot understand your issues; please explain in detail or join IRC, Telegram or forum for further support.
In version 18, it can generate shell scripts which I can run sequentially when I am not using the workstation. The new “Generate Script” does not do that any more. Is there a compatible feature that can do this?
In 19.04 it creates a MLT playlist with all infos in it. Just call ‘melt playlist.kdenlive’ to start rendering.
Hi:
everything works perfect for me within kdenlive. However I’m having problems doing rendering from command line.
If a do melt project.kdenlive, I got a failed to load project.kdenlive.
If I generate a script temp.mlt, I can run it from kdenlive but making
melt temp.mlt, I got a fail to load error
My melt version is 6.16.0 running on Linux 4.15.0-51-generic x86_64
Any help would be appreciated.
David
Where? Where is the .mlt file stored??
The 19.04 Ubuntu disco version from the stable kdenlive ppa doesn’t seem to be installable: all I get is the (stock) 18.12.3+git201902280143 version from the disco standard repo. The kdenlive-stable ppa does show a 4:19.04.1-1~ubuntu19.04.1 for disco, but apt-get/aptitude won’t see it for some reason I can’t figure out. Deinstalling, checking all apt sources, etc. didn’t turn up anything fishy…
Maybe that’s because the support packages haven’t been updated, or are these the stock distro packages?
Also, still cannot get the 19.04 appimage to do any timeline preview rendering. On a console I see that the timeline preview rendering job immediately crashes, but without any usable indication as to what it doesn’t like.
Crashes regardless of whether I’m using the appimage-internal ffmpeg and mlt, or the base OS ones:
– – -STARTING PREVIEW JOBS: (“/usr/bin/melt”, “/home/xxx/.cache/kdenlive/1557163588713/preview/preview.mlt”, “/home/xxx/.cache/kdenlive/1557163588713/preview”, “-split”, “0,25,50,75”, “24”, “mov”, “s=1920×1080 vb=36M threads=0 vcodec=dnxhd an=1”)
– – -STARTING PREVIEW JOBS . . . STARTED

// PROCESS IS CRASHED!!!!!!
// PROCESS IS FINISHED!!!
// PROCESS IS CRASHED!!!!!!
// PROCESS IS FINISHED!!!
// PROCESS IS CRASHED!!!!!!

// PROCESS IS CRASHED!!!!!!
On the compiled version it doesn’t crash, but it doesn’t work. Will open an issue.
Copy and paste of a group of compositions does not work.
Hmmm, can you describe the steps so I can try to reproduce?
19.04 AppImage on Kubuntu Disco:
Rendering of /home/….mp4 crashed
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not find the Qt platform plugin “xcb” in “” This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
I found that the Dynamic Text effect is broken for me:
-The drop down menu to choose fonts is gone.
-The field to enter text is gone and has been replaced by just the word ‘argument’.
The titler still has a font menu and the ability to enter text, so it seems that Kdenlive can still find fonts. I’m running Kdenlive 19.04.0b Appimage on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit and had been running Kdenlive 17.12.0d Appimage without this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Try with AppImage 19.04.2e. I see all fields.
Align audio does not work.
Steps:
1- Audio 1 click right “Define audio reference”
2- Audio 2 click right “Align audio”
Nothing happens
Any suggestions?
Should be solved. Try AppImage 19.04.1c.
After the update, the dynamic text doesn’t modified…
Great update but 3 problems in linux (Manjaro KDE):
– Kdenlive renders the whole timeline even if in and out is set and only selection set to render. Makes a 20 minute video instead a 3 minute video. Video has black screen after 3 minutes until end.
– Vaapi h264 Kdenlive Intel GPU encode documentation is not existent. ffmpeg documentation has slightly other options without = in command.
Trial&error
– Freeze effect makes Kdenlive force close as soon as placed on clip.
Point 1 and 3 should be solved with the 19.04.1c AppImage. GPU acceleration is off because of stability issue. Dev working on a re-implementation.
Wow, you guys did great! Love the new version!
In case you guys have some issues (like I did, mine did not want to move the timeline play bar live), make sure you erase all old config info and caches, 9 times out of 10 in my experience when you have trouble with a new version of software it is old config or leftover data hanging around screwing up.
Hello and congratulations for this update.
I have a question when I leave checked “Parallel processing” I have my rendering that has problem of image jump. What is the purpose of “Parallel processing”? cordially
“Parallel processing” for rendering use all CPU cores. It’s not 100% stable because MLT is not thread save. If you have such issue disable “Parallel processing”. Try “threads” with 0 (zero) to use more cores for rendering.
Merci beaucoup
Dynamic text color swapping is still broke.
When can we expect x264 10bit export, approximately?
When I try to add a slow effect with right click on the clip, it shows 100% and I can only make it fast and not slower than 100%. Am I missing something? I’m fairly noob. Thank you.

This issue is known: https://invent.kde.org/kde/kdenlive/issues/173
Workaround: Timeline > Current Clip > Edit Duration is possible
why did you remove Split Audio/Video button
it was a good feature
I am having problem in moving videos in timeline
I am not able to find button split audio and video automatically
please fix it in next version
Thanks
Why are you using such an old version? We are on 19.12…
